Fairy Tales Behaving Badly

As an early Mother's Day present, I took my mother to see the above mentioned theatrical experience. Basically it's an hour and half of eye candy, providing your idea of candy includes the often wacky and bizarre creations of a bunch of TAFE design students.

The Enmore Theatre was packed pretty much to capacity, at least in the stalls area. It was the first time wed ever been there, and we both thought it was a very prettily designed venue, though the seating was a little on the sardine cane side; fortunately despire getting the tickets only a week out I was able to get a decent enough location (N35-36).

As usual with these sort of productions, the music was a notch or two louder than it perhaps needed to be, and was a decidedly ecclectic collection of tracks ranging from the opening number from Moulin Rouge to the Nutcracker Suite to Bollywood. The same goes for the costuming (ranging from illuminated sea life to fetish wear to hyper stylised frocks to stuff that wouldn't look out of place in an Adam Ant clip) and the puppetry (wearable creations to giant multi-operator pieces to tiny little string-operated mannequins. The staging was minimal - basically an archway at the rear and two U-column stands at the front upon which were giant faux TVs that showed the multiple camera feeds operating throughout the performance for the benefit of this who couldn't see the stage directly.

Overall it was a fun night out.
